Programmes
Adamela's previous programmes include financial reporting fellowships, a specialist data journalism programme, arts reporting initiatives and social justice reporting internships. Below are the three core programmes currently underway.
The Continent is a weekly digital newspaper produced by African reporters, photographers, illustrators and editors. It is designed to be read and shared on WhatsApp (and other social messaging platforms), and has become Africa's most widely distributed newspaper. Past and present funders include the National Endowment for Democracy, the Mott Foundation, Africa No Filter, Osisa, and the Africa Climate Fund.
M&G Guardians
Designed to support independent journalists working on in-depth investigative, documentary and feature stories, The M&G Guardians programme provides funding and access to the platforms and resources of Adamela's partner, the Mail & Guardian. It also acts as a buffer between funders and journalists, which serves to safeguard trust in editorial independence and integrity.
M&G Climate Reporting Hub
The Climate Reporting Hub is a specialist reporting unit integrated into the M&G newsroom. Funded by Open Society and led by senior editors overseeing a team of junior and mid-level journalists, its mandate is to broaden and deepen climate reporting in South Africa, with a focus on the just transition to renewable energy.
